Postmaster General Megan Brennan to Delay Retiring

Postmaster General Megan Brennan is officially delaying her retirement date. While Brennan had initially planned on retiring from the US Postal Service effective on January 31, 2020, she has agreed to remain in her position until the USPS Board of Governors finds her successor.

Brennan’s Thoughts on the Matter

When Brennan initially announced her retirement plans, she didn’t expect. Back in October 2019 when she made her announcement, she stated that she “made a commitment to the Board of Governors that [she] would serve for five years and it has been [her] absolute honor to do so.”

“I feel a deep responsibility to this organization and to its future,” Brennan continued. “The advance notice of my retirement will allow the Board adequate time to conduct an executive search, select the next Postmaster General, and ensure a seamless transition.”

Brennan made history when she became the first female Postmaster General of the United States Postal Service in November 2014. This accomplishment is quite a leap from 1986, when she began her career as a letter carrier in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Prior to becoming Postmaster General, she served as Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President of USPS.

During her tenure as Postmaster General, Brennan famously helped lead USPS to become the premier carrier for eCommerce businesses. She also spearheaded the charge to advance technology and consumer-centric strategies, which has helped USPS to shape growth opportunities for the organization itself, as well as for all the industries it serves.

Who Will Become the Next Postmaster General?

We haven’t heard any clues as to who the Board of Governors will choose to succeed Postmaster General Brennan. However, whoever fills the position will be walking up to a pretty big task. Pre-funding legislation enacted in 2006 still continues to plague the Postal Service’s financial health. Amazon keeps gaining ground with their own shipping network, and other carriers continue boosting efficiencies with robots and drones.

In the meantime, however, the Board is glad to have Brennan staying on a bit longer than initially anticipated. Robert Duncan, the Chairman of the USPS Board of Governors, said the following:
