USPS Tops List of America’s Most Essential Companies
The Coronavirus pandemic has disrupted every single industry across the world, for better or for worse. Certain sectors such as shipping and logistics have experienced explosive growth, which others like hospitality and travel came to a profit-killing halt in quarter two. During this time, “essential” businesses have thrived, while many other businesses in “non-essential” industries face an uncertain future. Today, the Harris Poll released a study conducted during the latter part of May, in which they asked a sample group of Americans which companies they believed to be the 100 most essential during COVID-19…and the US Postal Service ranked in the top spot.
Some of America’s Most Essential Companies During COVID-19
“The Essential 100 is an in-the-moment assessment of who’s rising to meet the challenges of a nation torn apart by the pandemic, economic uncertainty and now social division,” said John Gerzema, CEO of The Harris Poll. “In the global financial crisis corporations were seen as part of the problem; this time they are a wanted part of the solution.”
According to the study that the Harris Poll conducted, the following names make up the top ten most essential companies during COVID-19:
- United States Postal Service
- Clorox
- UPS
- Walmart
- Amazon
- Purell
- Microsoft
- CVS
- FedEx
These rankings are comprised of the following four equally-weighted components that the Harris Poll posed to participants:
- Resolve: Do you think the company should be providing solutions during the COVID-19 pandemic?
- Trustworthiness: Do you trust the company to respond appropriately and effectively to the COVID-19 pandemic?
- Responsiveness: Do you think the company has had a good response or a poor response to the COVID-19 pandemic?
- Permanence: How much would you miss the company if it closed for good?
All Three Major Carriers Fall in the Top 10 Most Essential Companies
Interestingly enough, all three major shipping carriers appear in the top 10 most essential companies in this study. When ones looks at the data, this trend makes perfect sense. Amongst social distancing and quarantining, more consumers now order products online than ever before. It’s not just essential goods like groceries that people are buying online, either. As a whole, eCommerce orders for all types of products have surged during the Coronavirus. More eCommerce orders means more deliveries for the shipping carriers, which results in carriers like USPS, UPS, and FedEx topping the list of the ten most essential companies during COVID-19.
